9shot Rules: Golf Rules

Last updated: 4 November 2026

9shot Rules: Golf Rules ("the app") is a golf rules app made by 9shot ("we", "us"). This policy explains what information the app uses, where it goes and how you control it. In short: the app has no account, no advertising and no tracking. Most app data stays on your phone. If you use Ask Coach, the app sends your question, recent messages and the supporting information listed below to our server so Coach can answer.

What stays on your phone

The app stores the following data locally on your device:

  • cards you save and cards you viewed recently;
  • your language and appearance settings;
  • your Practice progress (lessons done, streak, best test score);
  • ruling notes, including any photo you add from your gallery (the app copies the photo you pick; it cannot see your other photos);
  • your Ask Coach chat history;
  • a random install ID used for Ask Coach's daily limit (see below).

This data is stored locally. If you use Ask Coach, some of it is also sent to our server as described below. You can delete it at any time: clear the chat in Ask Coach or delete notes or saved cards in the app. To remove the app's local data, clear its storage or uninstall it on Android; on iPhone, choose Delete App. This does not delete the usage records on our server described below, which are kept for 30 days. If device backup is turned on (Android backup in your Google account, or iCloud Backup on iPhone), this data may be included in that backup, under Google's or Apple's control.

Ask Coach

Ask Coach is optional. When you open Ask Coach, the app sends the random install ID to our server to check your daily question allowance. When you send a question, the app sends the following information to our server:

  • your question, and up to six earlier messages of the same chat so Coach can follow the conversation;
  • the rule card you came from, if you opened Coach from a card;
  • the app's language, the app version and the platform (Android or iOS);
  • the random install ID. It is created on your phone, is not linked to your name or any account, and the copy on your phone is removed when you delete the app's local data.

Our server passes your question and the earlier messages to Claude, an AI service of Anthropic (United States), which writes the answer. Phone numbers and email addresses detected by our filtering system are masked before the questions and messages are sent to Anthropic. The install ID and your IP address are not sent to Anthropic. Anthropic processes the questions and messages for us and retains them after processing. Its retention and deletion practices are governed by the terms applicable to the API service we use. See Anthropic's privacy policy.

We do not store your questions or Coach's answers on our server. To enforce the daily question limit and prevent abuse, our server keeps usage counts and technical information: the time, result, app version, platform and language, together with keyed, salted hashes of the install ID and IP address. These hashes change every day. These records are deleted after 30 days. Like any website, our hosting provider's web server may log IP addresses for security and operations.

Answers are automatic and can be wrong. They are not a ruling: in a competition, the Committee decides. Please do not type personal information into your questions.

In a future version the app may also send an app integrity token from Google Play (Play Integrity) or Apple (App Attest) with each question, so our server can check that requests come from the genuine app.

Rule content updates

The app works offline with the rules content built in. From time to time it may download updated rule content from our content server. As with any download, the server sees your IP address.

Things you choose to do

  • Report a problem opens your email app with a message to us. We receive only what you decide to send, and use it to answer you and fix the content.
  • Share a card or a ruling note uses your phone's share sheet; the content goes only to the app or person you pick.
  • Links to the official Rules of Golf (randa.org) and to other websites open in your browser. Those websites have their own privacy policies.

What we do not do

  • No account, sign-in, name, email or phone number is required.
  • The app has no advertising and no analytics or tracking tools, and we do not sell data.
  • The app does not use your location, contacts, camera or microphone.

This website

This section is about the website rules.9shot.net, not the app. The website uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views and to measure how fast pages load. Cloudflare states that Web Analytics does not collect visitors' personal data, does not use cookies or local storage for analytics, and does not track visitors across websites or over time by IP address or browser details. Cloudflare documents the following Web Analytics dimensions, among others: country, host, path, referrer, device type, browser and operating system. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.

Deleting your data

9shot Rules has no account, so there is no account to delete. Here is how to delete the data the app uses:

  • On your phone: clear the chat in Ask Coach and delete notes or saved cards in the app. To remove everything the app keeps on your phone, including the install ID, clear its storage or uninstall it on Android; on iPhone, choose Delete App. Copies in a device backup follow the backup settings of your Google or Apple account.
  • On our server: we do not store your questions or Coach's answers on our server. The usage records described above include counts and technical information associated with hashes that change every day. These records are deleted automatically after 30 days.
  • At Anthropic: clearing the chat or uninstalling the app does not delete the questions and messages retained by Anthropic. Their retention and deletion are governed by the terms applicable to the API service we use.

To request deletion of your data or ask a question about it, email support@9shot.net. We will review your request and explain what we can do.

Children

The app is for golfers in general and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Security

Ask Coach questions and content downloads travel over encrypted connections (HTTPS).

Changes

If we change this policy, we will update this page and the date above. Significant changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
